Discover more about Verla mill museum

Verla Mill Museum, located in the village of Verla, is a remarkably well-preserved 19th-century mill village and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996. This unique site offers visitors an immersive experience into the early days of Finland's wood processing industry. The museum comprises the groundwood and board mill, power plants, and worker's houses, presenting a comprehensive picture of industrial life in a rural setting. The first groundwood mill in Verla was established in 1872, followed by the board mill in 1882. The mill produced groundwood pulp and white wood pulp board until operations ceased in 1964. In 1972, it was reopened as Finland's first factory museum. The buildings, designed by architect Eduard Dippell, showcase the architectural style of the late 19th century. The machines and equipment were left untouched, providing an authentic representation of the board production process. A guided tour takes you through the stages of wood processing, from timber cutting to board drying, sorting, and packing. A documentary film shows the mill in operation during its final weeks in 1964. Visitors can also explore the surrounding area, including prehistoric rock paintings and themed trails. The Verla Mill Museum is owned and maintained by UPM.
