Hennala Barracks: A Historical Landmark in Lahti

Hennala Barracks, located in Lahti, Finland, is a site steeped in history and architectural significance. Constructed between 1911 and 1913 during the Russian Empire era, the barracks initially served as a military base. Its red-brick buildings exemplify Russian military architecture, making it one of the best-preserved examples in Finland. During the Finnish Civil War in 1918, the barracks was occupied by the Red Guards and later transformed into a prison camp after the Battle of Lahti. This camp became notorious for its harsh conditions, with over 1,100 Red detainees dying from executions, disease, and malnutrition. From 1920 to 2014, the garrison housed the Häme Regiment, and from 1940 to 1994, it served as the Central Military Hospital No. 2. In 2015, it briefly became an immigrant reception center, drawing international attention. Today, the area is being redeveloped into a residential and workplace area, blending historical charm with modern living. The Hennala Memorial Park features numerous monuments and memorials, including a bust of Marshal Mannerheim, honoring the area's military past.
