Discover more about Myrsky-patsas

Myrsky-patsas, or the Storm Statue, is a compelling piece of art located next to the Joutseno city library in Lappeenranta. Created by the artist Reino Puustinen, the sculpture portrays three horses running from approaching storm clouds. This artwork serves as a memorial to the severe storm that struck the area of Joutseno on July 8, 1972. The statue is made of steel and was commissioned by the Joutseno Lions Club. Due to cost considerations, steel was chosen over bronze, and the sheer size of the monument necessitated the construction of a dedicated hall for its creation. The artist and his partners gathered steel pieces from Hackman OY and Ovako to construct the statue. Myrsky-patsas was unveiled on July 8, 1979, exactly seven years after the storm, by Johannes Virolainen, the speaker of the Parliament at the time. The statue underwent restoration in 2007 and remains a notable landmark in Lappeenranta, symbolizing the strength and perseverance of the community in the face of natural adversity.
