Discover more about Kärnäkoski Fortress

Kärnäkoski Fortress, constructed between 1791 and 1793, is a bastion fortress erected by Russia to safeguard Saint Petersburg from Swedish advances. Empress Catherine II commissioned General Alexander Suvorov to build a chain of fortifications, including Kärnäkoski, to protect the empire's northwestern border. The fortress was strategically positioned at the mouth of the Kärnäjoki river, guarding both roads and waterways. The fortress itself is an irregular shape, following the terrain, and was designed using the traditional French bastion system by French engineering officers who had fled the French Revolution to Russia. Although built to defend against the Swedish threat, it never saw action against them. Today, the site is a nationally significant cultural historic landmark, with the Finnish National Board of Antiquities having restored the fortress to its former glory. Visitors can explore the repaired walls and cleared grounds, and during the summer months, sheep graze the grounds. Located in the Saimaa Geopark, Kärnäkoski Fortress offers more than just history. The surrounding area features beautiful mill buildings, crystal-clear waters, and the idyllic village of Partakoski with its stone bridges. Visitors can also explore the smaller Vuorilinnoitus fortress, the old barge harbor, and the Kärnäkoski Fortress Trail. Note that in the summer of 2025, the Kärnäkoski bridge will be under repair, and the mill will be closed for safety reasons.
