Discover more about Neitvuori Hill

Neitvuori Hill, located 35-43 kilometers east of Mikkeli, is one of the highest scenic spots in Southern Savo, Finland. Rising 110 meters above the waters of Lake Saimaa, it provides hikers with breathtaking views over the Luonteri archipelago. The hill, reaching a height of 184 meters, is known as the magnificent guardian and symbol of the Hiidenmaa Routes. Formerly called Hiidenvuori, meaning a mighty, sacred place, Neitvuori's name changed due to a legend. It is said that during the Great Wrath in the early 18th century, a young maiden plunged to her doom from the top of the mountain while trying to escape from Russian invaders. Another story suggests she jumped due to heartbreak. The area's bedrock consists of a mixture of mica gneiss and granite, known as veined gneiss, dating back 1.9 billion years. The landscape was shaped during the Ice Age, leaving behind unique geological formations. Visitors can explore marked hiking trails, including the 4-kilometer Hiijje Silimukka trail, which winds through varying forest terrain and rocky slopes. A shorter 2.6 km route is also available. The trails connect to the Hiidenmaa trails, offering a total of 55 km of marked routes. Along the Hiidenkierros circle trail (approximately 13 km), hikers can find the Hiidenkota shelter with a fire pit. Neitvuori is a popular destination throughout the year, with schoolchildren visiting in May and many tourists in July. The area offers a chance to experience the natural beauty and cultural history of the Saimaa region.
