Discover more about Culture House Korundi

Korundi House of Culture is a cultural cornerstone in Rovaniemi, Lapland, offering a unique perspective on art and culture from a northern vantage point. It is home to the Rovaniemi Art Museum, which features an extensive collection of Finnish contemporary art from the 1940s to the present, and the Lapland Chamber Orchestra, the northernmost professional orchestra in the EU. The building itself has a rich history, originally constructed in 1933 as a post bus depot. Remarkably, it was one of the few buildings in Rovaniemi to survive the destruction of World War II. After the war, it was expanded using bricks salvaged from the city's ruins. In 1986, the building was converted into the Rovaniemi Art Museum, and later, in 2011, it was remodelled into the Korundi House of Culture. The renovation was designed by architect Juhani Pallasmaa, who combined the building's historical elements with modern architectural design. Korundi's concert hall is known for its exceptional acoustics, designed by Henrik Møller in cooperation with Pallasmaa. The hall hosts a variety of events, from classical concerts to conferences, and has a seating capacity of 340. In addition to the museum and concert hall, Korundi includes a café-restaurant, and a shop selling local products and art. Korundi also hosts workshops and art education programs.
