Getting there

Car

To reach Porttilouhi by car, head towards Juuka via Route 6. From Joensuu, take Route 6 northeast for approximately 60 kilometers until you reach Juuka. Once in Juuka, follow signs to Porttilouhi. From Juuka ABC, drive 19 km in the direction of Nurmes and turn left onto Tervavaarantie. Drive along Tervavaarantie for 8 km and turn right onto the forest road. Drive 1 km and leave the car on the left side of the road. Parking is available near the attraction. Note that the final kilometer is on a forest road. Parking is free.

Public Transport

To reach Porttilouhi via public transport, take a bus from Joensuu to Juuka. The bus service is operated by OnniBus or local providers, with tickets costing around 10-15 euros. From the Juuka bus station, you can walk (about 2 km) or take a local taxi to Porttilouhi. A taxi may cost around 10 euros for the short ride. Check the bus schedule online before your trip to coordinate arrival times.

Overview

Porttilouhi, located in Vuokko, Juuka, is a breathtaking gorge sculpted by the last ice age. The 700-meter-long canyon appears unexpectedly in the midst of a coniferous forest, framed by two vertical cliffs. The floor of this fairytale-like ravine is blanketed in soft, deep moss, where the enchanting Porttipuro stream flows.According to local legends, Porttilouhi was once a ceremonial site for folk healers and witches. Sick individuals were carried through the fabled stone gateway to ward off evil spirits and illnesses. At the gorge's northern end lies a sacred sacrificial site, a natural amphitheater where people once offered food and animals.Today, visitors can hike the 1.5-kilometer UKK Trail to explore this natural wonder. The trail leads to a campfire site on Porttilouhi's rocky outcrop, providing a vantage point to admire the gorge's greenery from above. The area is ideal for those seeking relaxation and outdoor activities, offering opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and simply soaking in the serene atmosphere.
