Discover more about Heinätorinpuisto park

Heinätorinpuisto, located in the Hollihaka district of Oulu, is a beloved green space with a rich history. Originally, the area was designated as a hay market in the city plan of 1824, serving as one of Oulu's three market squares where residents from surrounding rural communities could sell their goods. As its name suggests ('heinä' translates to 'hay'), the market primarily facilitated the trade of hay until 1913. In 1915, the area was transformed into a park, with Johan W. Miesmaa designing the initial landscaping. Interestingly, from 1918 to 1923, the park served as a potato field before being converted into a lawn. Over the years, the park has seen several updates, including the planting of poplars in the 1950s and further landscaping and playground expansion in 1965. A renovation in 2006-2007 added more summer flower plantings. Today, Heinätorinpuisto is bordered by Torikatu, Heinätorinkatu, Kirkkokatu, and Limingankatu. The park features diagonal walkways that intersect at a central fountain. On the Limingankatu side stands the Heinätori School, designed by architect Wolmar Westling and completed in 1875. A playground area is located on the Heinätorinkatu side. The park is home to a variety of trees, including linden trees, poplars, silver spruces, maples and Russian apple trees, as well as flower and shrub plantings like fuchsias and Hungarian lilacs. Visitors can enjoy free concerts during the summer months, adding a vibrant cultural element to the park's serene atmosphere. With convenient accessibility and nearby parking, Heinätorinpuisto is a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists seeking a peaceful escape in Oulu.
