Discover more about Oulu Castle

Oulu Castle, historically known as Oulun linna in Finnish, was established in 1590 on an island in the delta of the Oulu River. Originally constructed primarily from wood and earth, the castle served as a stronghold for Swedish soldiers during conflicts with Russian Karelia. There may have been an earlier medieval castle on the same site by 1375. Throughout its history, Oulu Castle faced numerous challenges. In 1715, Russian forces burned down the wooden structures during the Great Northern War. The final blow came in 1793 when lightning ignited the remaining wooden structures, causing a gunpowder magazine to explode and nearly destroy the entire building. Today, visitors can explore the castle's remaining ruins, including the stone cellar, which houses a café. The site also features a small exhibition on the castle's history. The grounds around the castle offer scenic views and a peaceful atmosphere. The former observatory, built in 1875, now serves as the Tähtitorni Café.
