Discover more about Kuntsi Museum of Modern Art

The Kuntsi Museum of Modern Art, opened in February 2007, resides in a beautifully renovated former customs warehouse dating back to 1875. Situated in Vaasa's Inner Harbour, the museum offers a unique blend of historical architecture and contemporary art. The museum's foundation lies in the extensive art collection of Consul Simo Kuntsi, who began collecting in the 1950s with a vision of establishing a contemporary art museum. In 1970, he donated 121 Finnish artworks to the city of Vaasa and established the Kuntsi Foundation. Today, the collection has grown to over 900 Finnish and international works, representing pop art, kinetic art, surrealism, and more. The Swanljung Collection, amassed by dentist and art collector Lars Swanljung, is also housed here. Visitors can explore a diverse range of exhibitions, from displays of the museum's permanent collections to showcases of emerging and established artists. The museum also hosts interdisciplinary events, including music, literature, dance, and theatre performances. For younger visitors, the museum offers guided tours, workshops, and an atelier called Studio. After immersing themselves in art, visitors can relax at Café Simo or browse the museum shop for art books and unique gifts.
