Maailman Varanapa: A Monumental Sculpture in Oulainen

Maailman Varanapa, meaning "World's Spare Pole," is a towering sculpture that dominates the landscape of Oulainen. Created in 1991 by artist Ilkka-Juhani Takalo-Eskola, the sculpture stands as Finland's tallest public artwork, reaching a height of 29.7 meters. The sculpture is constructed from spiral-seam pipes provided by Rautaruukki's Oulainen factory and granite from Oulainen Kivi. The upper part of Maailman Varanapa is designed to resemble a fish's eye, while the tip points towards magnetic north. This orientation adds a layer of meaning to the sculpture, connecting it to the natural world and the region's geographical location. The sculpture was unveiled during the Mesenaatti event on July 3, 1991, a significant contemporary art exhibition held in Oulainen. The event aimed to explore the intersection of photography and other art forms, and Takalo-Eskola's sculpture served as a lasting symbol of the exhibition's creative spirit. Today, Maailman Varanapa remains a prominent landmark in Oulainen, attracting visitors and serving as a point of pride for the local community.
