Discover more about Maritime museum of Vaasa

Located on the shore of the Palosaari strait, the Vaasa Maritime Museum offers a glimpse into the city's significant maritime past. For over 150 years, this strait served as Vaasa's outport and a hub for shipbuilding. The museum resides within one of the well-preserved old salt magazines, with the oldest dating back to the 1700s, moved from Old Vaasa after the great fire of 1852. Inside, visitors can explore exhibits detailing local maritime traditions, from 19th-century shipbuilding to contemporary luxury yachts. The museum boasts a diverse collection of objects, including ship models, shipwreck artifacts, and photographs that capture the lives of seafarers from bygone eras. A highlight is the large lighthouse lantern from Valsörarna, welcoming guests in the lobby, alongside displays about Kvarken lighthouses and the lives of their keepers. Discoveries from vessels wrecked in the Kvarken archipelago add intrigue, including a diving suit from the early 20th century weighing approximately 100 kg. The upstairs gallery showcases models of historical vessels, including a model of the last postal ship between Eckerö and Grisslehamn and Finland's first steamer to sail beyond the Baltic Sea. The museum also features approximately one hundred boat engines made by 14 Vaasa-based engine manufacturers. Visitors can also explore exhibits about Vaasa's shipping companies and the ferry traffic between Vaasa and Umeå. The museum also highlights the earth upthrust in the Kvarken region, with stones indicating different stages over the centuries.
