Discover more about Outsider Art, Edvin's Trail

Edvin's Trail, or Edvininpolku, offers a captivating blend of nature and art in Vaasa, Finland. This unique hiking area is home to a collection of over 150 outsider art sculptures crafted by local artist Edvin Hevonkoski. Born in 1923, Hevonkoski, a former shipyard welder, began his artistic journey in the early 1980s after retiring due to health issues. Inspired by Finnish politics, literature, and his own life experiences, Hevonkoski used wood and later scrap metal and recycled materials to create his thought-provoking and often humorous works. The sculptures depict a range of subjects, from characters from Finnish folklore to war heroes and contemporary politicians. His art transformed a simple jogging path into a 'fantasy walk'. In addition to the sculptures, the trail also features a wartime history village, complete with a trench, military shelter, and smoke sauna, offering a glimpse into Finland's past. Hevonkoski, a WWII veteran, constructed this area with the help of other veterans, creating a poignant tribute to their shared experiences. The park has been recognized as one of the best outsider art parks in Finland. Today, Edvin's Trail is maintained by a heritage society of volunteers.
