    Discover more about Ritgrund Lighthouse

Ritgrund Lighthouse stands as a steadfast beacon on the edge of the Kvarken Archipelago, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its unique landforms and natural beauty. Situated on a small, rugged island northeast of Replot, it marks the beginning of an important seaway from the Bothnian Bay to the Bothnian Sea. Constructed initially as a wooden daymark in 1863 to warn ships of the shallow waters, it was later upgraded to a functioning lighthouse in 1945. Ritgrund holds the distinction of being the only lighthouse in Finland built with a wooden frame. Standing 18 meters high, with its light reaching 25.2 meters above sea level, it has guided countless vessels through the archipelago's challenging waters. In addition to the lighthouse, the island features a pilot station constructed in 1871. This two-story building, expanded in the 1930s, housed pilots who guided ships through the treacherous waterways until 1983 when the pilot station moved to Replot. The pilot station remains on the island as a testament to its maritime history. Visitors to Ritgrund can experience the solitude and rugged beauty of the outer archipelago. The island's rocky landscape and unique flora and fauna offer a glimpse into the natural wonders of the Kvarken region. While exploring the island, one can appreciate the historical significance of the lighthouse and pilot station, imagining the lives of those who braved the elements to ensure safe passage for ships.
