Tottesund Mansion: A Glimpse into Ostrobothnian History
Explore Tottesund Mansion in Maxmo: A historic manor offering a glimpse into Ostrobothnian life, culture, and the wedding site of Jean Sibelius.
Tottesund Mansion is one of the few remaining mansions in Ostrobothnia, offering a unique glimpse into the region's history and culture. The estate's history dates back to the 1660s when Count Claes Tott established a manor in Maxmo. In 1733, it became the residence of a colonel of the Ostrobothnian regiment. The current main building was completed in 1800 by Gustaf von Numers, a colonel of the Ostrobothnian infantry regiment. The mansion has served many purposes throughout the centuries, including a residence for military officers and a venue for significant events. Finland's national composer, Jean Sibelius, was wedded to Aino Järnefelt in its grand hall in 1892. Today, visitors can explore several exhibitions within the mansion, including displays about Sibelius' wedding, Maxmo's first school, and the Finnish Civil War. Legend has it that the mansion is also home to a ghost, the White Lady, whose room can be visited on the third floor. The mansion is surrounded by a large garden and park, inviting visitors to stroll through the grounds and enjoy the natural surroundings. The Herrgårdsleden, a 4km nature trail, starts near the mansion, featuring picnic areas and a barbeque hut. The Maxmo municipality purchased the manor in 1947, and it was restored in the 1990s. Today, the ballroom can be rented for various events.
