Getting There

  • Walking

    If you are in Tampere city center, such as at the main square (Keskustori), head south on Hämeenpuisto. Continue until you reach Finlaysoninkatu, then turn right. Continue straight for about 1 kilometer; the entrance to the Finlayson Area will be on your left. The walk should take approximately 20-25 minutes.

  • Public Transport

    From Tampere city center, take bus number 2 or 3 to the 'Finlayson' bus stop. The journey takes approximately 10-15 minutes. Walk east along Finlaysoninkatu for about 200 meters to reach the Finlayson Area. A single ticket costs approximately €3.02.

  • Car

    When driving from Tampere city center, head south on Hämeenpuisto towards Finlaysoninkatu. Turn right onto Finlaysoninkatu and continue straight for about 1 kilometer. The entrance to the Finlayson Area will be on your left. Parking is available at P-Plevna (Polttimonkatu 5), with over 600 spaces. Parking fees apply. Be aware that starting July 16, 2025, there will be concrete surface repair work in P-Plevna, which is expected to last until mid-September.

Founded in 1820 by James Finlayson, a Scotsman, the Finlayson cotton factory grew to become one of the largest industrial companies in the Nordic region. The factory significantly contributed to Tampere's growth, with the city developing around it. From the 1830s to the 1900s, Finlayson was like a town within a town, providing its workers with housing, a school, a hospital and other services. In 1882, the first electric light in the Nordic countries was lit here. Today, the area has been modernized, offering a blend of historical charm and contemporary attractions. Visitors can explore museums such as the Finnish Labour Museum Werstas, which offers free entry, and the Spy Museum. They can also enjoy the Finlayson Art Area, which exhibits various art forms during the summer. The area is also home to unique attractions like the Roof Walk, offering a different perspective of Tampere. With its mix of shops, restaurants, cafes, and historical landmarks, the Finlayson Area provides a unique and engaging experience for tourists.
