How to get there

Tampere-Pirkkala Airport is within Pirkanmaa and is the region's principal air gateway, although international routes and schedules change over time. Tampere is also a major railway junction with direct domestic connections to Helsinki, Turku, the west coast and other Finnish cities. Helsinki Airport is outside the region but is a practical entry point for visitors arriving on a wider range of international flights; the onward journey can be completed by train or road. National roads connect Tampere with Helsinki, Turku, Pori, Vaasa and central Finland.

History of Pirkanmaa

Early Settlement and the Häme Inland

Archaeological evidence shows that people have lived around Pirkanmaa's lakes and waterways since prehistoric times, using forests, fishing grounds and fertile clearings in ways adapted to the northern climate. The region formed part of the wider Häme cultural area, whose communities traded and travelled along inland routes before Finland became incorporated into the Swedish realm. Surviving place names, burial sites and archaeological finds indicate a long continuity of settlement, although the population remained dispersed compared with the later industrial towns.

Swedish Rule and Medieval Parish Communities

During the medieval period, Pirkanmaa was integrated into the political, religious and administrative structures of the Swedish kingdom. Christianity, parish organisation and farming settlements expanded through the inland districts, while waterways connected local communities with Häme and the Gulf of Bothnia. Churches and historic village landscapes in the region reflect this gradual development rather than a single medieval capital. The area remained predominantly rural, with agriculture, forestry and fishing forming the basis of life for centuries.

Tampere Founded beside the Tammerkoski, 1779

King Gustav III founded Tampere in 1779 beside the Tammerkoski rapids, recognising the site's waterpower and position between Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi. The settlement grew slowly at first, but its rapids later provided the energy required for major manufacturing. Tampere's foundation changed the regional balance by creating an urban and commercial centre within an otherwise rural inland landscape. Industrialisation and the Factory City

The Finnish Civil War in Tampere, 1918

Tampere was the principal stronghold of the Red Guards during the Finnish Civil War and became the scene of the conflict's decisive urban battle in March and April 1918. Government forces captured the city after intense fighting, house-to-house combat and a major surrender. The event left a lasting mark on Tampere's social memory and on the national history of Finland. The conflict's interpretation remains connected with museums, monuments, archives and local discussions about the industrial working-class community that had developed before independence.

Post-war Growth and Regional Transformation

After the Second World War, Pirkanmaa experienced rapid urbanisation, industrial expansion and demographic change. Mänttä developed around the forest industry, particularly the companies associated with the Serlachius family.
