Discover more about Helvetinkolu Gorge

Helvetinkolu Gorge, often mistranslated as "Hell's Gorge," is a striking natural landmark within Helvetinjärvi National Park in Finland. The gorge isn't just one singular ravine, but rather a combination of two distinct gorges. The main gorge stretches from Iso Helvetinjärvi lake to Pitkä Helvetinjärvi lake, featuring a flowing river with rapids and smaller lakes. The narrower gorge, angled sharply, adds to the dramatic landscape. Formed by tectonic shifts millions of years ago and further sculpted by glacial activity, Helvetinkolu presents a dramatic cleft in the bedrock. Its steep, vertical walls descend sharply, creating a unique microclimate that supports specialized mosses and lichens. The gorge itself is narrow, in some places only two meters wide, adding to the sense of drama and enclosure. Visitors can explore the gorge via well-maintained and marked trails, including the popular 4-kilometer Helvetistä Itään Nature Trail. This trail leads through diverse landscapes of spruce forests, pine woods, and mire depressions, offering a comprehensive experience of the park's natural beauty. A key highlight is the viewpoint that offers a stunning panorama of both gorges and the surrounding lakes. Helvetinkolu has attracted visitors since the 1800s and has inspired artists and composers with its rugged beauty. The area holds cultural significance, once serving as a wolf trap and later as a meeting place for local youth. Today, it remains a popular destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts, offering a chance to witness the power and beauty of Finnish wilderness.
