Riuttaskorpi Recreational Forest, located in Ylöjärvi near Kuru, offers a serene escape into the Finnish wilderness. This 16 square kilometer area, part of the Suomenselkä watershed region, is characterized by its rugged terrain, coniferous forests, small mires, and diverse aquatic features. The forest boasts approximately 15 kilometers of marked trails, inviting visitors to explore its natural beauty on foot. Hiking through Riuttaskorpi, you'll encounter the prominent north-south oriented moraine ridge of Pitkäkangas, small lakes, and rushing rapids. The waterway running through the area has historically been used for timber floating, and remnants of old timber floating structures can still be seen today. Keep an eye out for the Haukijärvi cooking shelter, Suutarilankoski lean-to shelter, and Kuttulammi cooking shelter along the trails. Historically, Riuttaskorpi has been relatively sparsely populated, primarily known for log floating and its white waters powering mills. The area is also said to have inspired Johan Ludvig Runeberg, a Finnish poet, to write the tale of the traveler's vision in The Tales of Ensign Stål. Today, Riuttaskorpi is ideal for day trips and overnight excursions. While exploring, note that some structures and trails may not be well-maintained, so waterproof boots and a topographic map with a compass are recommended.
