Car
If you are driving, make your way to U.S. Route 1 (the Overseas Highway) which runs through the Florida Keys. Depending on your starting point, head south on U.S. Route 1 toward Islamorada. Once you reach Islamorada, look for the sign for 'Alligator Reef Lighthouse' near the Indian Key Historic State Park. Note that the lighthouse is located approximately 4 miles off the coast of the Florida Keys and cannot be accessed by car. You will need to arrange for a boat to reach the lighthouse.
Public Transportation and Boat
If you are using public transportation, take the Greyhound bus or a shuttle service to Key Largo or Islamorada. From there, you can rent a boat or join a guided boat tour that includes Alligator Reef Lighthouse in their itinerary. Be sure to confirm that the tour stops at the lighthouse. Expect to pay for the boat rental or tour, which can cost anywhere from $50 to $150 per person depending on the company and duration of the tour.
Boat Rental
For those who prefer to explore on their own, you can rent a boat from one of the many marinas in Islamorada or Key Largo. Be sure to rent a boat that is suitable for the waters around Alligator Reef. After renting, head out to the coordinates approximately 24.851775 latitude and -80.618817 longitude. It’s a 4-mile trip from the shore, and you should allow about 30 minutes of travel time. Make sure to have a map or GPS, as navigating to the lighthouse can be tricky due to shallow waters.
