The pedestal bears the names of his three ships: Niña, Pinta, and Santa Maria, along with the inscription, “Erected by Contributions from Patriotic Americans”.The statue, created by Cuban artist Alberto Sabas, was dedicated on Columbus Day in 1953. It was intended as a symbol of unity between Spain, Cuba, and the United States, particularly for Tampa's large Cuban population. Over time, the statue has become a source of increasing controversy.For decades, the statue has faced criticism from Native American and Indigenous rights organizations, who cite Columbus's mistreatment of native populations. Protests and vandalism have occurred, demanding the statue's removal. In 2020, Tampa Police maintained a presence at the park to prevent damage during increased protests. The park underwent a restoration project in 2023, which included repairing leaks, lights, and the reflecting pool.
