The Old Schoolhouse, a quaint, one-story building located on the University of Tampa campus, offers a unique glimpse into the city's early educational history. Built in 1858 by General Jesse Carter, it initially served as a private school for girls. The building's architecture reflects a simple Greek Revival style, typical of early educational structures.Over the years, the Old Schoolhouse has adapted to the changing needs of the community. In 1886, Henry B. Plant, a key figure in Tampa's development, acquired the schoolhouse and repurposed it for the Tampa Bay Hotel, using it as an apothecary shop and for storage. In 1931, the City of Tampa gave the building to the DeSoto Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), who moved it to its current location and have maintained it since.The Old Schoolhouse was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on December 4, 1974. Today, the building is open for viewing by appointment and during semi-annual open house events. While it may not be a bustling tourist attraction, its serene environment offers a space for reflection on Tampa's history.
