The Ais, one of Florida's largest indigenous groups, inhabited the area for centuries, relying on the river for sustenance. Their burial mound, dating back 500 to 1,000 years, still stands within the park.In 1838, the U.S. Army constructed Fort Pierce on this site during the Second Seminole War, naming it after Brevet Lt.
