The park encompasses two significant periods: the Ais Indian culture and the Second Seminole War. The Ais, one of Florida's largest indigenous groups, inhabited the area for centuries, relying on the river for sustenance. Their burial mound, dating back 500 to 1,000 years, still stands within the park.In 1838, the U.S. Army constructed Fort Pierce on this site during the Second Seminole War, naming it after Brevet Lt. Col. Benjamin K. Pierce. The fort served as a vital supply depot and briefly as the headquarters for the Army of the South. Although the fort was abandoned in 1842 and destroyed by fire the following year, the site remains a testament to this period.Today, Old Fort Park provides walking trails, picnic areas, and waterfront views.
