Moulin Passe-Avant: A Historic Watermill in Amiens

Moulin Passe-Avant, located at 186 Rue St Leu in Amiens, is a captivating reminder of the city's industrial heritage. This four-story timber and plaster watermill, built in 1528, stands on a canalized arm of the Somme River in the Saint-Leu district. In the Middle Ages, mills and waterways were essential to the city's economy. The Moulin Passe-Avant, whose name translates to 'passes before', had priority over the neighboring Moulin Passe-Arrière in drawing water from the canal.Originally a flour mill, it later transitioned to mustard production in the 19th century for the Brûlé factory. In the 20th century, it provided power for textile dyeing until the late 1970s. The mill's structure showcases decorative elements, including masks, coats of arms, and a statue of the Virgin Mary. Classified as a historical monument in 1986, the mill was restored by the association Le Bel Amiens.The Saint-Leu district, often called the 'Little Venice of the North,' is known for its charming canals, cobblestone streets, and colorful half-timbered houses.
