According to local legend, in the 19th century, Biarritz whalers caught in a storm were miraculously guided back to port by a divine light emanating from the rock. In gratitude, they erected a statue of the Virgin Mary on the rock in 1865, transforming it into a symbol of protection and faith.Napoleon III decided to use the rock as an anchor point for a harbor. To facilitate this, a wooden footbridge was initially built to connect the rock to the mainland. However, the wooden structure was damaged by the sea, and in 1887, it was replaced by a metal footbridge. The footbridge is often mistakenly attributed to Gustave Eiffel, but it was constructed by the Schryvers workshops in Haumont, northern France.Visitors can walk across the 75-meter footbridge to reach the Rocher de la Vierge.
