Perched atop a promontory in the heart of Gascony, the Castle of the Counts of Armagnac in Lectoure whispers tales of medieval power and strategic importance. Originally constructed in the mid-14th century, the castle served as a visible seat of power for the Counts of Armagnac. These powerful figures shaped the region's destiny for centuries. The castle's strategic location allowed them to control the surrounding lands and project their influence. In the 18th century, the castle underwent a significant transformation when the eastern part was destroyed to make way for a large hospital-manufacture. While this marked the end of the castle's role as a fortress, the remaining west wing offers a glimpse into its former grandeur. Visitors can explore two vaulted rooms, a belvedere atop the western bastion, and a hidden postern door. Since 2015, the site has also housed a "Village of Brocs," a collection of second-hand dealers and artists, adding a unique cultural dimension to the historical site. Lectoure itself is a town steeped in history, having been an important stopping point on the pilgrimage route to Saint Jacques de Compostelle. Today, it is known for its Gascon countryside, local delicacies like foie gras and Armagnac, and artisanal pastel blue.
