Discover more about Espace EDF Le Bazacle

Espace EDF Le Bazacle is more than just a power plant; it's a vibrant cultural space that blends industrial history with modern art and environmental awareness. Located on the banks of the Garonne River in the heart of Toulouse, the Bazacle has been a strategic site since long before Roman times. Originally a ford, it later became home to floating mills in the 9th century, replaced by land-based mills in the 14th century. These mills were owned by what is considered the world's first joint-stock company. In 1888, the Grand Moulin du Bazacle was converted into a hydroelectric power plant, which still operates today. EDF (Électricité de France) became the owner in 1946, continuing the site's role in powering the city's development. Visitors can tour the facility to see how the plant works and learn about the importance of hydroelectricity as a renewable energy source. The Espace EDF Le Bazacle also hosts temporary art exhibitions, often with a focus on themes related to energy, the environment, or local culture. The panoramic terrace offers stunning views of the Garonne and the Saint-Pierre Bridge. A fish ladder allows visitors to observe the river's aquatic life. The Bazacle is labeled “Tourisme & Handicap” for providing accessibility for visitors with disabilities.
