Discover more about Château de la Gardine

Château de la Gardine stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of winemaking in the Rhône Valley. Located in the prestigious Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, this family-run estate has been producing exceptional wines for generations, blending tradition with innovation to capture the essence of the terroir. The history of Château de la Gardine dates back to the 17th century, but it was in 1945 that the Brunel family acquired the property, embarking on a journey to elevate its wines to new heights. Gaston Brunel, the patriarch of the family, recognized the potential of the estate's vineyards and set about restoring and expanding them. Today, the estate spans 52 hectares, benefiting from the diverse soil compositions and ideal microclimates that characterize the Châteauneuf-du-Pape region. One of the most distinctive features of Château de la Gardine is its unique bottle design. Gaston Brunel, while expanding his wine cellar, discovered asymmetrical, mouth-blown glass bottles and fell in love with them. Determined to use them for his wines, he found a glass producer in Italy to recreate the design. These bottles, embossed with the iconic Châteauneuf-du-Pape emblem of a papal tiara above the keys of Saint Peter, have become synonymous with the estate's identity. The vineyards of Château de la Gardine are planted with a variety of grape varietals, including Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault for the reds, and Grenache Blanc, Clairette, and Roussanne for the whites. These grapes thrive in the region's unique terroir, characterized by its stony soils, warm climate, and the influence of the Mistral wind. The Brunel family is committed to sustainable viticulture, employing environmentally friendly practices to preserve the biodiversity and natural balance of the land. The winemaking process at Château de la Gardine is a careful blend of tradition and modern techniques. The grapes are hand-harvested and meticulously sorted before fermentation. The wines are then aged in a combination of French oak barrels and foudres, allowing them to develop complexity and finesse. The estate produces a range of wines, including the flagship Châteauneuf-du-Pape, as well as wines from Rasteau and Lirac. Visitors to Château de la Gardine are welcomed into a world of wine and history. The tasting cellar, housed in an 18th-century building, offers panoramic views of the vineyards. Guests can sample a selection of the estate's wines, learning about the appellations and the characteristics of the terroirs. The Brunel family and their team guide visitors through the tasting experience, sharing their passion for winemaking and the heritage of the estate. Beyond the wine tasting, visitors can explore the estate's grounds, taking in the beauty of the vineyards and the surrounding landscape. The estate is located just outside the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, making it easily accessible for those exploring the region. From the estate's terrace, there are views of the Luberon, the Alpilles de Provence mounts and Avignon. Château de la Gardine also participates in local events and festivals, such as Les Floraisons Musicales in July and the Journée du Grenache in September. These events offer visitors a chance to experience the culture and traditions of the Rhône Valley. Whether you are a seasoned wine connoisseur or a curious traveler, a visit to Château de la Gardine promises an unforgettable experience. Immerse yourself in the world of Rhône wines, discover the history of a family-run estate, and savor the flavors of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir.
