Step through Avignon's main gateway, the Porte de la République, and journey into a city where medieval history meets vibrant modern culture, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Porte de la République, Avignon's main city gate, stands as a proud entrance to the historic heart of the city. Built in 1855 following the arrival of the railway, it provides direct access to Avignon's city center. Flanked by pseudo-medieval pavilions constructed in 1863 by Viollet-le-Duc, the gate marks the beginning of Cours Jean Jaurès, a tree-lined avenue leading to the Place de l'Horloge. More than just an entry point, the Porte de la République symbolizes Avignon's blend of medieval fortifications and 19th-century urban planning, offering visitors a captivating glimpse into the city's rich history and architectural evolution. Its proximity to the train station makes it a natural starting point for exploring Avignon's UNESCO World Heritage sites.
