Discover more about Hotel De La Prefecture

The Hôtel de la Préfecture, also known as the Hôtel Forbin de Sainte-Croix, stands as a testament to Avignon's rich and complex history. The building's origins trace back to the 14th century when it served as the Livrée de Poitiers, a cardinal's residence. Later, it was acquired by Cardinal Julien della Rovere, who would become Pope Julius II, and in 1476, he established a college for students of civil and canon law here. In the 18th century, Jean-Baptiste Raynaud de Forbin de Galéans des Issarts acquired the building and commissioned Jean-Baptiste Franque to reconstruct it, although the existing façade by Pierre Mignard was retained. During the French Revolution, the hotel was confiscated and became the seat of the department's Directoire before becoming the Préfecture de Vaucluse in 1800. Today, the Hôtel de la Préfecture continues to function as an administrative center. Although access to the interior may be limited, the building's exterior, with its elegant lines and intricate details, is well worth admiring. The surrounding area, with its quaint shops, delightful cafes, and other historical sites, provides an opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture.
