Discover more about Palais des Papes

The Palais des Papes, a UNESCO World Heritage site, stands as a testament to the power and grandeur of the Roman Catholic Church during the 14th century. Constructed in less than 20 years (1335-1352), this immense 15,000 square meter palace is equal to the size of four Gothic cathedrals. Originally built as a fortress and papal residence, the Palais des Papes served as the seat of Western Christianity when Pope Clement V moved the papacy from Rome to Avignon in 1309. For nearly seven decades, nine popes resided here, including the 'builder popes' Benedict XII, who constructed the Palais Vieux (Old Palace), and Clement VI, who added the Palais Neuf (New Palace). Six papal conclaves took place within its walls. The palace is composed of two joined buildings: the old palace of Benedict XII and the new palace of Clement VI. Together, they form the largest Gothic building of the Middle Ages and a prime example of the International Gothic architectural style. The design was the work of Pierre Peysson and Jean de Louvres, while the ornamentation was created by Simone Martini and Matteo Giovanetti. Visitors can explore over 25 rooms, including audience halls, ceremonial rooms, private apartments, and chapels adorned with frescoes. Highlights include the Consistoire (Audience Room), Grande Chapelle (Great Chapel), Grand Tinel (Banquet Hall), and the Chambre du Cerf (Stag Room) with its medieval hunting scenes. The Histopad, a digital tablet included with the admission price, offers augmented reality views of the palace as it appeared in the 14th century. The palace also hosts art exhibitions and cultural events throughout the year, particularly during the Festival d'Avignon.
