Discover more about Pl. Lamartine

Place Lamartine is a vibrant, modern roundabout in Arles, France, that carries a significant artistic legacy. It was here, at 2 Place Lamartine, that Vincent van Gogh lived and worked from May to December 1888. He immortalized this location in his painting 'The Yellow House' (La Maison Jaune), which depicted his residence and studio. Van Gogh rented four rooms in the right wing of the building, using the ground floor for his workshop and kitchen, and the upper rooms as living spaces. The Yellow House served as a hub for artistic collaboration, most notably with Paul Gauguin, who lived there for nine weeks. Although the original Yellow House was destroyed during World War II, the site remains recognizable, allowing visitors to connect with Van Gogh's time in Arles. Today, Place Lamartine is a busy junction, but it retains elements of the scene Van Gogh captured. A plaque marks the spot where the Yellow House once stood, inviting visitors to imagine the artist at work. While the Yellow House is gone, the spirit of Van Gogh's artistic vision lives on in Arles, making Place Lamartine a must-see for art enthusiasts.
