Discover more about Thermae of Constantine

The Thermae of Constantine, also known as the Thermes du Nord, are ancient Roman baths dating back to the 4th century AD. Located in Arles, France, on the banks of the Rhône River, these baths were constructed during the reign of Emperor Constantine when he resided in Arelate (Arles). The baths are a testament to the advanced engineering and social importance of Roman bathing culture. Once part of a grand imperial palace, Palais Constantin, the Thermae offered public bathing facilities. The complex included hot and cold swimming pools, saunas, and massage rooms, catering to both men and women. The baths were not only a place for hygiene but also a social hub for mingling, exercise, and relaxation. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved remains of the caldarium (hot-water bathing area), featuring suspended heating floors (hypocaust) and three pools. The excavated area represents only the northern part of the original complex, offering a glimpse into the scale and elegance of the construction. The site has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981, as part of the "Arles, Roman and Romanesque Monuments".
