Discover more about Palais des Papes

The Palais des Papes, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Avignon, stands as a testament to the power and influence of the Catholic Church during the 14th century. Constructed in less than 20 years (1335-1352), this immense palace, covering 15,000 square meters, is equivalent in size to four Gothic cathedrals. Originally built as a fortress and papal residence, the Palais des Papes became the seat of Western Christianity in 1309 when Pope Clement V left Rome for Avignon. Over the next several decades, seven popes resided here, expanding the palace into what it is today. The palace is composed of two joined buildings: the Old Palace of Benedict XII and the New Palace of Clement VI. The Palais des Papes housed the largest library in Europe at the time and was the site of many changes within the Church. Visitors can explore more than 25 rooms, including audience halls, ceremonial rooms, and private apartments, and chapels adorned with frescoes. The Histopad, a digital tablet provided to visitors, uses augmented reality to show the palace as it was in the 14th century. The palace also hosts cultural events, exhibitions, and concerts throughout the year. The courtyard of the Palais des Papes is a central performance location during the Festival d'Avignon, held every July.
