Discover more about Château de La Dauphine

Château de La Dauphine, a jewel in the Fronsac appellation of Bordeaux, invites visitors to step back in time and experience the grandeur of a royal estate. Its history stretches back to the late 1600s, but it was in 1750 that the magnificent château was constructed, named in honor of Maria Josepha of Saxony, the Dauphine of France and mother of Louis XVI, who was expected to visit. Although the visit never occurred, the name and the royal connection have endured, lending an air of prestige to this exceptional vineyard. For centuries, Château de La Dauphine remained in the hands of the same family, until it was sold in the 1980s. After changing ownership a couple of times, Guillaume Halley acquired the estate in 2000. At that time, the château was in a state of disrepair, but Halley embarked on an ambitious restoration project, transforming it into the stunning property it is today. In 2015, the Labrune family acquired the estate, adding their passion and dedication to its continued success. The estate spans 66 hectares, with 53 hectares dedicated to vineyards. The vines are planted on a diverse terroir of clay, limestone, and sandy soils, benefiting from the region's favorable climate and microclimates. The vineyard is primarily planted with Merlot (85%), complemented by Cabernet Franc (15%). Since 2012, Château de La Dauphine has embraced organic farming practices, earning organic certification in 2015. The estate is also experimenting with biodynamic methods, further demonstrating its commitment to environmental stewardship. One of the most remarkable features of Château de La Dauphine is its state-of-the-art winery. The semi-underground, circular vat room houses 26 concrete vats, along with 16 stainless steel tanks. This innovative design allows for plot-by-plot vinification, ensuring that each parcel of grapes is treated with the utmost care. The winery also utilizes a gravity-fed system, minimizing the need for pumping and preserving the delicate flavors of the wine. The wines are aged in French oak barrels, with approximately 30% new oak, for 12 months. A visit to Château de La Dauphine is an immersive experience that engages all the senses. Guests are invited to explore the meticulously restored château, wander through the picturesque park with its ancient trees, and discover the innovative winery. The ground floor of the château, which serves as a private home for the owners, is open for tours, showcasing its elegant interiors and historical charm. The central living room is particularly impressive, with its sculpted ceilings representing the four seasons. The wine tasting experience at Château de La Dauphine is a highlight of any visit. The estate produces a range of exceptional wines, including red, white, and rosé. The red wines are known for their rich, complex flavors and elegant structure, while the white wines are crisp and refreshing. The rosé, made in the Provence style, is a delightful summer favorite. All the wines are reasonably priced, typically ranging from €18 to €35 per bottle. Château de La Dauphine offers a variety of tours and workshops to cater to different interests. The classic tour includes a walk through the park and vineyards, followed by a tasting of two to three wines. The prestige tour adds a visit to the interior of the château, providing a glimpse into its rich history and elegant design. For a truly unique experience, guests can embark on a "Heritage Tour" in a classic Citroën 2CV, exploring the vineyards, a traditional fishing hut on the Dordogne River, and the estate's truffle orchard. This tour concludes with a hilltop tasting of three wines paired with local delicacies. Beyond the wines and the history, Château de La Dauphine is a place of beauty and tranquility. The estate is set on a beautiful spot alongside the Dordogne River, offering stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Whether you are a wine connoisseur, a history buff, or simply seeking a peaceful escape, Château de La Dauphine is sure to captivate your senses and leave you with lasting memories. As you plan your visit, keep in mind that Château de La Dauphine is open year-round by appointment, Monday to Friday. During the summer months, it is also open on Saturdays and Sundays by appointment. To fully explore the area, a car is recommended. However, it is also possible to take a train to Libourne and then rent bicycles for the final leg of the journey. With its royal history, exceptional wines, and stunning setting, Château de La Dauphine is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to the Bordeaux region.
