Place des Quinconces, located in the heart of Bordeaux, is one of the largest city squares in Europe, spanning approximately 12 hectares. Created in 1820 on the site of the Château Trompette, its initial purpose was to prevent rebellions against the city. The square's name derives from the quincunx pattern of the trees that once lined its perimeter.The square is adorned with several significant monuments and sculptures. The most prominent is the Monument aux Girondins, erected between 1894 and 1902, commemorating the Girondist deputies who were victims of the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution. This monument features a tall column topped by a statue of Liberty breaking her chains, along with bronze fountains and allegorical sculptures. Two rostral columns, dating back to 1829, stand facing the Garonne River, symbolizing commerce and navigation. Statues of Michel de Montaigne and Charles de Secondat, baron de Montesquieu, both important figures in Bordeaux's history, also grace the square.Throughout the year, Place des Quinconces serves as a focal point for various events, including fairs, concerts, circuses, and sporting events. The Foire aux Plaisirs, a funfair, is held twice a year, while an antique fair and a ham fair also draw crowds. The square is easily accessible via public transportation, with the Quinconces tram stop serving multiple tram and bus lines.
