Discover more about Palais Gallien

Palais Gallien, located in Bordeaux, France, is a historical monument that stands as the city's only remaining Roman amphitheater. Constructed in the 2nd century AD, during the Roman rule of Bordeaux (then known as Burdigala), it was a significant venue for public events, including gladiatorial fights, animal hunts, and theatrical performances. The amphitheater could accommodate approximately 22,000 spectators, twice the town's population at the time. Over the centuries, Palais Gallien has undergone numerous transformations. Following damage from a Frankish invasion around 276 AD, the arena's wooden supports were burned, leaving only the stone walls. In the Middle Ages, it served as a quarry for building materials, and during the French Revolution, it was used as a place of execution. By the 17th century, the site had become a refuge for criminals and prostitutes. Today, Palais Gallien's ruins are integrated into the urban architecture of Bordeaux. Visitors can explore the ancient remains, including a monumental gateway, arches, and wall remnants that are incorporated into surrounding houses. The site is open to the public year-round and is free to visit.
