Rising from thick woods above the village of La Rochepot, the Château de La Rochepot is a marvelous medieval fortress that offers fabulous views of the surrounding countryside. Originally built in the 12th century, the castle was largely reconstructed in the 15th century and then again in the late 19th century, after being purchased by the wife of President Sadi Carnot. She gifted it to her son, Colonel Hippolyte Sadi Carnot, who oversaw its restoration to its former glory, drawing inspiration from the Château de Châteauneuf-en-Auxois.The castle's exterior is characterized by its conical towers, drawbridge and multi-colored tile roofs, making it a quintessential fairytale castle. Inside, visitors can explore a fascinating combination of utilitarian and luxurious spaces, including a weapons room, ceremonial halls, and an imposing kitchen. The castle once housed a Chinese room donated by Empress Tzu-Hi.While the castle has been closed to the public since 2018 and its contents were scattered at auction in 2021, its striking exterior remains a worthwhile sight. The grounds offer picturesque views and photo opportunities, allowing visitors to appreciate the castle's architecture and its dramatic setting.
