Discover more about Château d'Étampes

The Château d'Étampes, originally a royal stronghold, stands as a testament to French medieval history, though now largely in ruins. Founded in the 10th century, the castle gained prominence in the 12th century under Louis VII, who commissioned the imposing keep, the Tour de Guinette. This unique tower, with its quatrefoil (four-leaf clover) design, reflects tactical experimentation in medieval military architecture, intended to deflect missiles and eliminate dead ground around the tower's base. Over the centuries, the Château d'Étampes played a strategic role, guarding the Paris-Orléans route. It saw expansions under Philip II and served as a residence for notable figures, including the exiled Queen Ingeburge. Besieged multiple times during the Hundred Years' War, the castle was eventually ordered to be dismantled by Henry IV in 1589, leaving only the Tour de Guinette standing. The Tour de Guinette, rising approximately 27 meters high, is constructed from rubblework with chained corners. Its design is rare, with each lobe measuring about 7 meters in diameter. While the interior is not accessible to visitors, the exterior can be explored, and the tower is open to the public during heritage days. The tower's design is believed to have inspired similar structures, such as Clifford's Tower in York, England. Today, the Château d'Étampes is a classified historical monument, preserved as a symbol of the region's rich heritage.
