Château des Ormes: A Glimpse into French Aristocracy and Enlightenment

Château des Ormes stands as a testament to French aristocratic life and the Enlightenment period. The estate's history began in the 15th century with the Marans family. In 1642, it was acquired by the Pussort brothers, uncles of the influential Jean-Baptiste Colbert. The castle saw significant changes in 1729 when it was purchased by Count Marc-Pierre Voyer d'Argenson, Minister of War under Louis XV. D'Argenson, a friend of Enlightenment thinkers like Diderot and D'Alembert, transformed the château into a vibrant intellectual center. He hosted prominent figures such as Voltaire, Marmontel, and Fontenelle. Diderot and D'Alembert even dedicated the first volume of their famous Encyclopédie to the Count in 1751. The castle's architecture reflects its evolving history, with contributions from renowned architects like Charles de Wailly and Alfred Coulomb. Visitors can explore the vast main courtyard, the Pussort and D'Argenson wings, a marble-floored vestibule, and the grand staircase. Other highlights include the old kitchens, an 18th-century ice house, a rare 1902 motorboat, and a 1906 power plant.Today, Château des Ormes welcomes visitors to immerse themselves in its fascinating past. The castle is open for self-guided tours from June 1st to September 30th, every day except Tuesday, from 1 PM to 7 PM.
