Discover more about Royal Château of Blois

The Royal Château of Blois, located in the heart of the Loire Valley, is more than just a castle; it's a journey through French history and architecture. For centuries, it served as a residence for counts and French monarchs, each leaving their mark on the structure. The result is a unique composite of architectural styles, from the medieval remnants to the Gothic, Renaissance, and Classical wings that surround the central courtyard. Originally a 13th-century fortress, the château evolved into a royal residence under Louis XII, who initiated its transformation into an urban palace. His Gothic wing, with its red brick and grey stone facade, showcases early Italian artistic influences. Francis I, a builder-king, added a Renaissance wing distinguished by its open circular staircase and intricate decorations. The château also houses the classical Gaston d'Orléans wing, though part of the Francis I wing was demolished to make way for this addition. Inside, visitors can explore the royal apartments, furnished and adorned with polychrome decors. The Fine Arts Museum, located in the Louis XII wing, displays a rich collection of paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts. The Estates General Room, dating back to the 13th century, is one of France's oldest seignoral rooms. In the summer evenings, a sound and light show illuminates the château's facades, recounting tales of royal life and intrigue.
