Discover the Wonders of Glaciorium: A Glacier Museum in Chamonix
Ascend to the Mer de Glace via the historic Viaduc de Montenvers for panoramic alpine views, glacial exploration, and a journey through time on the iconic cogwheel railway.
The Viaduc de Montenvers, an iconic 19th-century bridge near Chamonix, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the French Alps and the Mer de Glace glacier. Constructed of stone, the viaduct itself is a testament to engineering of a bygone era. The viaduct provides access to the Montenvers train, a cogwheel railway that ascends to the Mer de Glace. The site provides access to the Ice Cave, a man-made grotto carved into the glacier, and the Glaciorium, an interactive museum detailing the glacier's history and the impact of climate change. The viaduct serves as a starting point for hikes, including the popular Grand Balcon Nord trail. Whether you're drawn to the stunning scenery, the historical railway, or the exploration of glacial wonders, the Viaduc de Montenvers is a memorable alpine destination.

Train
The primary access to the Viaduc de Montenvers and the Mer de Glace is via the Montenvers Railway, a cogwheel train departing from Chamonix-Mont-Blanc. The Montenvers train station (Gare de Chamonix Montenvers) is located at 35 place de la Mer de Glace, a short walk (less than 300m) from the main SNCF train station in Chamonix. Upon arrival at Chamonix train station, follow signs for 'Montenvers' and take the outdoor footbridge directly to the Montenvers station. Trains depart frequently, approximately every 20-30 minutes during peak season. A round trip ticket costs €31 for adults and €26.40 for children/seniors (65+). A 'Vallée Blanche' return ticket, including the train, cable car, and Ice Cave access, costs €33 for adults and €28.10 for children/seniors. Family tickets are also available. The train journey takes approximately 20 minutes.
Walking
For experienced hikers, it's possible to hike to Montenvers from Chamonix. Two well-marked trails start opposite the Montenvers train station. The 'Pony Track' is a steeper, more direct route, while the 'Moraine Route' is a more gradual ascent traversing glacier-scoured bedrock. Both hikes take approximately 2-3 hours to reach Montenvers. Alternatively, hikers can take the Aiguille du Midi cable car to Plan de l'Aiguille and traverse the 'Grand Balcon Nord' trail to Montenvers, a scenic hike of approximately 2.5 hours. Note that the trails can be rocky and challenging, and appropriate footwear is essential. Upon arrival at Montenvers, access to the Ice Cave requires an additional descent via cable car and a series of steps.
