Grand Balcon Nord: A Panoramic Alpine Traverse

The Grand Balcon Nord, or Great North Balcony, is a classic Chamonix hiking trail renowned for its panoramic views and relatively easy access. Situated on the southern slopes of the Chamonix Valley, the trail offers stunning vistas of the Mont Blanc massif, the Aiguilles Rouges, and the Mer de Glace, France's largest glacier. Despite its name, the "Nord" refers to the direction the balcony faces, not its location.The most popular section of the Grand Balcon Nord stretches between Plan de l'Aiguille, the mid-station on the Aiguille du Midi cable car, and Montenvers, home to the historic Montenvers Railway and commanding views of the Mer de Glace. The well-maintained path traverses the mountainside, presenting a steady and enjoyable grade for hikers of moderate fitness levels.Along the route, hikers can enjoy diverse alpine scenery, from lush grasslands and rocky terrain to cascading streams and snow-capped peaks. An optional detour to Signal Forbes offers even more spectacular views of the Mer de Glace and the surrounding mountains. The trail also provides glimpses of local wildlife, including donkeys grazing near the Refuge du Plan de l'Aiguille. The best time to hike the Grand Balcon Nord is from July to October, when the trail is typically free of snow.
