Discover more about Statue of Balmat and Saussure

The Statue of Balmat and Saussure, erected in 1887, stands as a tribute to Jacques Balmat and Horace-Bénédict de Saussure, key figures in the history of Mont Blanc's exploration. Balmat, a local Chamonix guide, and Saussure, a Genevan scientist and aristocrat, are immortalized in bronze for their contributions to mountaineering. The statue captures Balmat pointing towards Mont Blanc, symbolizing the achievement of the first ascent. Saussure, who had offered a reward for the first successful climb, stands beside him. Although Balmat summited Mont Blanc with Michel-Gabriel Paccard, it is Balmat and Saussure who are depicted in this monument. A separate statue of Paccard was erected in 1986 to acknowledge his role. Place Balmat, where the statue is located, is a central gathering place in Chamonix. The statue is one of the most photographed landmarks in Chamonix, along with Mont Blanc itself. Visiting the statue offers a chance to reflect on the courage and scientific curiosity that drove the exploration of the Alps.
