Discover more about Parc of Saleccia

Parc de Saleccia, located just outside L'Île-Rousse in Corsica, is a captivating botanical garden showcasing the island's unique flora and the essence of the Mediterranean. This 7-hectare park, classified as a "Jardin Remarquable" (Remarkable Garden), offers visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the soul of Corsica, exploring its diverse plant life and vestiges of ancient agricultural practices. The park is divided into several themed areas, including the maquis trails, olive groves, and the oleander valley, each offering a unique perspective on the Corsican landscape. Visitors can wander through olive trees, cypresses, and oleanders, marveling at the stunning Mediterranean setting. The park's design, created by landscape architect Bruno Demoustier, emphasizes the botanical, historical, traditional, human, and environmental aspects of the region. Parc de Saleccia is not only a place of natural beauty but also a testament to the island's history. The site was once an ancient olive grove, cultivated since Neolithic times, and remnants of this agricultural past, such as citrus gardens, cereal terraces, and hay huts, can still be seen today. The park was once part of the dowry of one of Pascal Paoli's sisters, a significant figure in Corsican resistance. After a major fire in 1974 destroyed most of the olive trees, the Acquaviva family's son-in-law worked to rehabilitate the site, creating a botanical collection of Corsican and Mediterranean plants. Opened to the public in 2005, Parc de Saleccia offers a range of activities and facilities for visitors of all ages. These include a garden restaurant serving local, organic products, a children's play area, an educational farm with animals, and workshops for both young and old. The park also hosts events such as concerts, exhibitions, and themed evenings.
