The Citadelle d'Ajaccio, also known as the Citadelle Miollis, is a historic fortress that has watched over the city of Ajaccio since its construction in the late 15th century. Originally built by the Genoese to protect the city from maritime attacks, the citadel has undergone several transformations throughout its history. Located on a rocky promontory, the citadel initially consisted of a keep and a low wall. In 1553, with the arrival of French troops, the defenses were improved. The Genoese ultimately gave the citadel its present appearance after the Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis in 1559. Over the centuries, the citadel served various purposes, including a military barracks and a prison. During World War II, it was occupied by Italian fascist forces. In 2005, the citadel was transferred to the city of Ajaccio. Until recently, the citadel was occupied by the military. Today, the Citadelle d'Ajaccio is undergoing a transformation into a cultural and artistic space, with shops and artisan workshops. Visitors can stroll along the ramparts, enjoy the panoramic views of the city and the Gulf of Ajaccio, and explore the historic architecture.
