Discover more about Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower, locally nicknamed "La dame de fer" (French for "Iron Lady"), was constructed as the centerpiece of the 1889 World's Fair to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the French Revolution. The tower was designed by Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier, two senior engineers working for the Compagnie des Établissements Eiffel. Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built the tower, added a number of extras to it, ranging from a secret apartment to telegraph and radio broadcast equipment. Construction began in 1887 and took just over two years, using 18,038 iron pieces prefabricated in Eiffel's factory. These pieces were then transported to the site and assembled by 300 workers, held together by 2.5 million rivets. The tower stands 330 meters (1,083 ft) tall, about the same height as an 81-story building, and was the tallest structure in the world for 41 years. The tower has three levels for visitors, with restaurants on the first and second levels. The first floor features a glass floor, an historical interactive gallery, and a fragment of Gustave's spiral staircase. The second floor offers a 360° panorama deck. The summit features a Champagne bar and Gustave Eiffel's office complete with wax figures. The tower is open year-round, offering both daytime views and nighttime illuminations.
