Discover more about Monument Sadi Carnot

Located in the heart of Dijon on Place de la République, the Monument Sadi Carnot stands as a poignant reminder of France's history. Erected in 1899, it honors Marie François Sadi Carnot, the fourth president of the Third Republic, who was assassinated in 1894. Following his assassination in Lyon, Dijon, where Carnot had served as a deputy, sought to commemorate his life and service. The monument's design, a collaboration between sculptors Mathurin Moreau and Paul Gasq and architect Félix Vionnois, features a central marble statue of President Carnot in an orator's pose. Atop the monument’s central pylon, a bronze statue of Fame by Gasq holds a laurel wreath above Carnot. Moreau also created the allegorical figures of History and Sorrow, which flank the central statue. History, depicted as a woman inscribing Carnot's name, and Sorrow, as a veiled woman, add layers of meaning to the memorial. The rear of the monument includes an altar to the homeland, topped with flames. Place de la République, where the monument stands, has a rich history, having served as a site for fairs, markets, and cabarets. The square was created in 1888 and has undergone transformations, including a redesign by landscape architect Alfred Peter, who added a contemporary fountain at the foot of the statue. Today, the square is a central hub with tram and bus connections and is surrounded by cafes and shops, making it a vibrant public space.
