Discover more about Bregille Fort

Fort de Bregille, also known as Fort Morand after 1887, is a 19th-century military fortification situated on the summit of Bregille hill, 446 meters above sea level, northeast of Besançon's old town. Built between 1820 and 1832, it was intended to protect the city following the wars of the 17th and 18th centuries. The fort replaced an earlier earthwork that had been captured by the enemy in 1814, highlighting the strategic importance of the hill. Although equipped for battle, Fort de Bregille never saw action during the Franco-Prussian War or World War I, as Besançon was spared from these conflicts. During World War II, it housed an anti-aircraft battery. Today, the fort is used by the police and an animal protection society, and access to the interior is restricted. Despite the limited access, the ramparts of Fort de Bregille remain open, offering visitors a chance to enjoy unparalleled views of Besançon and the surrounding area. The surrounding Bregille forest features pedestrian paths and a fitness trail, making it a popular destination for outdoor activities.
