Discover more about Fontaine des Innocents

The Fontaine des Innocents, gracing the Place Joachim-du-Bellay in the 1st arrondissement, is a historical and artistic treasure. Constructed between 1547 and 1550, it is celebrated as the oldest monumental fountain in Paris. The fountain's origins trace back to the reign of King Henry II, who commissioned it to commemorate his royal entry into the city. Pierre Lescot, the architect, drew inspiration from ancient Roman nymphaeums, while Jean Goujon sculpted the exquisite nymphs and mythological figures that adorn the fountain. Originally named the Fountain of the Nymphs, it was built against the wall of the Saints Innocents Cemetery. The cemetery itself was the city's oldest and largest, its name derived from a church honoring the children massacred by King Herod. Over the centuries, the fountain has undergone several transformations. In 1787, as the cemetery was relocated, the fountain was moved to the center of the newly created market square. During this move, architect Augustin Pajou created a fourth façade to match the existing three. In 1858, the fountain was moved again to its current location in the heart of Place Joachim-du-Bellay. At this time, six stacked basins were added to each façade, enhancing its visual appeal. Today, the Fontaine des Innocents remains a captivating landmark, surrounded by restaurants and cafes, and a short distance from the Centre Pompidou. Its intricate sculptures, rich history, and central location make it a must-see attraction for visitors exploring the city.
